Theatre and Disabilities
Seeing individual abilities
"The performance was a fine example of an inclusive approach. This work can only result in greater community cohesion through greater understanding and acceptance of and individual’s needs and their contribution to society." (Mike, STEM)
We have extensive experience of working with a variety of disabilities with both adults and children. Projects and shows have been undertaken with various groups around the region. As well as groups specifically for those with different abilities we also run an inclusive theatre group for children with and without disabilities.
We run a number of 'Diverse' groups which are specifically for adults (16 and above) with learning difficulties/disabilities. These groups meet once a week and work towards up to three performances a year. The groups are user led and members are encouraged to take the lead in all areas, including warm-ups, character ideas and music selection for the shows.
We believe that it is important to meet the individuals and well as the groups needs. We work on finding peoples strengths and skills and enhancing that through our work.
As well as running a variety of workshops on drama, music, movement, dance and visual arts, many of our groups work towards public performances throughout the year and we firmly believe that regardless of any disability, our members are capable of producing and achieving public performances of a high standard.
Not only do we enable those that want to sing/dance/act to do so, we also work with members that are interested in doing sound/music, helping backstage, producing costumes etc.
